Seeing at the Nanoscale 2011. A Great Success

Seeing at the Nanoscale 2011 was hosted by Bruker and California NanoSystems Institute.  The conference was chaired by Paul Hansma of University of California, Santa Barbara and Paul Weiss of University of California, Los Angeles. The three-day program featured strong technical presentations and posters on topics ranging from biological applications and nanomaterials to energy and instrument development.

Over 16 countries were represented and the conference featured a team of world known SPM leaders as invited speakers who presented throughout the conference and interacted with researchers in animated discussions on new ideas and innovations. Invited speakers included Christoph Gerber (Univ. of Basel, Switzerland), Daniel Müller (ETH Zürich, Switzerland), Robert Cook (National Institute of Standards and Technology), ZX Shen (Stanford University), Markus Raschke (JILA, University of Colorado), Joseph W. Lyding (University of Illinois, Ubana-Champion), Thuc-Quyen Nguyen (University of California, Santa Barbara), Urs Duerig (IBM Zurich), and David Awschalom (University of California, Santa Barbara).

Many mentioned that it was the best conference they had participated in with a 97% satisfaction rate and over 84% rating the conference as good or great in a follow up survey. The pre-conference tutorials on Biology, Nanomechanics, Nanoelectronics, and High-Speed Imaging, which were delivered by Bruker’s scientific staff in the Santa Barbara laboratories, sold out early, and were a resounding success in all technical and collaborative respects. In addition, there was overwhelming interest in the hands-on training and direct interaction sessions with Bruker scientists/engineers at the conference.

Special Highlight at the Conference

During the conference a very special session was held in tribute to Prof. Paul Hansma’s retirement from his teaching position. Many of Paul’s peers and students presented moving stories of Paul and his commitment to pioneering a new field and driving excellence in research.
