Typical deflection sensitivity of Icon

Hello,

What are typical deflection sensitivities you'd expect for a contact mode and tapping mode probe? General ranges are fine I just want to make sure I'm calibrating properly.

Deflection sensitivity depends on:

  1. The shape of the laser spot when it hits the PSD (how does the response change as a function of spot position)
  2. The length of the cantilever and how it bends along its length (since we are using an optical lever, this determines how much the spot moves)
  3. The geometry and electronics of your particular AFM

There are a lot of different probes used for Contact Mode and Tapping Mode, but below are some estimates (for air).  Don't be surprised if you see variations of 20-30% from these numbers:

ScanAsyst-Air 60
ScanAsyst-Fluid 30
SNL-A 60
SNL-B 110
SNL-C 60
SNL-D 110
TESPA 60
MPP-13120 (TAP525A) 60
MPP-12120 (TAP150A/MESP-RC) 60
MESP/SCM-PIT 110
