  • Re: lateral deflection of cantilever on flat surface

It's normal to get some torsional bending of the cantilever during a Z-ramp force curve. All it takes is some small offset between the tip location and the centerline of the cantilever to generate a torque when the tip presses on the sample. There can also be imperfections in the alignment of the photodetector that would cause some coupling. But

  • Re: Calibration of cantilever spring constant using Multimode IIIa

Hi Annie, The issue with having a much stiffer reference cantilever is that the softer cantilever will bend a lot more than the reference cantilever when the two are pressed together. So the resulting deflection sensitivities (Sref, Shard in the app note) will not be very different. Using the spring constants you give here and Eqn 5 in the app note

  • Re: BioHeater accessory for AFM

According to their datasheet, the BioHeater can only heat, not cool. Their specification is ambient to 80°C. There are, however, cooling sample stages available for both Bruker and Asylum AFMs. If you have access to a Veeco/Bruker AFM I can provide more information on the available options. Regards, -Ben

  • Re: Fluid Cells THF Resistant?

The fluid cell itself shouldn't be harmed by THF. It's just glass, PTFE, and gold plated platinum-iridium wire. The challenge is finding a suitable o-ring material. We offer silicone, fluorosilicone and Viton o-rings, but none of these have good resistance to THF. Only fluoropolymers like PTFE have suitable chemical resistance, but even more

  • Re: E-Box Vertical Deflection Drift

Joshua, In addition to the possible causes that Alexandre mentions, temperature changes are also a very common source of deflection drift. Many cantilevers have a metal coating, so as the temperature changes the metal coating expands at a different rate than the silicon nitride or silicon cantilever and so the cantilever bends in response to that stress

  • Re: Catalyst with PicoAngler ?

Hi Guillaume, Sorry for the delay, it took some investigation to find out the differences between the two PicoAnglers. Unfortunately, we don't have a plug-in adapter that allows you to use the PicoAngler on both the PicoForce and the NSV. What is possible would be to change the cable on the PicoAngler to convert it from the PicoForce version to

  • Re: Tilted Baseline with Veeco Bioscope Catalyst AFM

Hi Leon, There can be a lot of different reasons for sloped or curved force curve baselines. Some are artifacts and others are real contributions to deflection. Drift, long range forces (e.g. electrostatic), optical interference, and poorly shaped reflected laser spots are common reasons. Tip scanning AFMs often have some inherent baseline tilt because

  • Re: Catalyst with PicoAngler ?

Yes, you can use the PicoAngler with Catalyst. It just needs to be the NanoScope V version of the PicoAngler with the 25-pin dsub connector that plugs into the front panel of the NanoScope V. I mention that because there's a different version specific to the MultiMode PicoForce that uses a 15-pin dsub connector, which plugs into the PicoForce accessory
