  • SThM - Tilt in thermal channel

Hi. I'm still working on my SThM measurements. Got them to run well so far (using contact mode), but with my last measurement series I got a new phenomenon I cannot really explain, namely a continues tilt in the thermal channel. This tilt also does not seem to relate to the topography. I tried readjusting the laser on the probe, but to no avail

Hi Ian, the samples are very smooth as they are cut with an ultra microtome with a fresh blade. I usually go with 5um scan size and a rate of 0.5-0.8Hz. Think I will try to lower that, maybe it helps. Since the sections are 2um in height (and basically sharp edges) it might just be that I cannot scan those. Pity, but at least I know now that it is not

Hi! What is your scanning resolution? I guess for such a large increase, the produced roughness is very fine. So Iimagine it could be that for a 50x50um scan your resolution is just too low to actually "see" the real roughness. I'd go down to a smaller scan size (maybe with a resolution of <10nm/px) and do a few scans. Safes time too

  • SThM on Dimension Icon

Hi all, I have a question concerning scans on the Dimension Icon with the VITA-DM-GLA-1 tips. I want to do scans on wood thin sections (2um), but even without heating it's very troublesome to get good topography contact scans. Due to the quite strong shift of the vertical deflection once the tip is heated, this becomes even worse when trying to
