Hi, I am using AFM, multimode , serial number U642881.

Does anyone here know how to do this kind of measurement( see link below) ?

Thank you in advance.

You ramp the bias voltage and monitor the piezo resonse. This is very similar to a friction loop. Not sure what exactly is not clear to you so if you could please elaborate a bit on what you have already done and where your sticking point is that would be helpful.

Thank you for your response.

Actually, I know what I am going to do which I have to bias voltage both dc and ac and then try to monitor the piezo response. But what I do not know is about the program that I should use. I don't know where to start with the program. Would you please help me with that step by step? Or if you can help me more or know who I should contact including the contact info, that would be nice. You can email me at saenrang@wisc.edu or just answer the question here.

PS. I try to contact the technical support for this issue and they said that they have forwarded my question to the applications specialists. It's been a month now and I haven't got any answers yet. So, please help me.

Thank you.

Hi Wittawat,

I am still not completly sure I understand the problem you are having but lets start here:

If you do have a Nanoscope 5 controller attached to your MM you should be able to use "contact mode"  to get into feedback. You can typically apply the ac-bias to your sample and the dc-portion to your tip. The ramp that is shown in the paper you try to follow where you see the d33 plotted against dc-bias can be obtained using the "ramping" function. Here is a link to a similar paper from a different group using another model of our product offereing for you. This paper has a bit more experimental information in it that may be of benefit to you: http://www.mpi-halle.mpg.de/mpi/publi/pdf/7281_07.pdf.

After getting the ramps of lock-in amplitude vs dc-bias you can export the curves and further analyze them using e.g. open-office, excel, etc. If you consider that d33= +/- Delta L you just have to watch the units to arrive from the measured lock-in amplitude at d33. d33 is expressed in the units of [length/Volt] so you need to know the cantilever sensitivity to convert the lock-in amplitude and finally divide the value by the excitation voltage.

Please let me know if that answers your question,

Stefan

It would really help us be more specific in our response if you could provide the version of Nanoscope that you are using (look under the "Help" menu where it says "About...") and the type of controller that you are using.

Thanks!

We are using NanoScope 7.30 (Build  R1Sr1.44887).

Would you please more specific how to operate the program and input the parameters on this version?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Wittawat,

7.30 means that you are using a NSV so the generic lock-ins are available to you. This is great.

The first thing that you have to do would be to place a suitable tip conductive tip in the holder and align the laser. After that you should be able to engage on your substrate, find a suitable flat area, and get a contact mode scan. Have you done that? PR can be executed using the following procedure. Please note that you will only have 1x vertical gain. If you want the 16x gain enabled I suggest to get another adaptor that we can modify.

Good luck

What should I do next? I have engaged the tip and scan it in a contact mode. Do you have a direct contact or telephone number so that I can call and ask you step by step?

Thank you.

Wittawat,

I sent you a pdf with instructions on what to connect on a MM and what software settings to use a while back. I hope you received it. If not please let me know and I fire an email off to you again. I tried uploading it to nanoscale world but there seems still something wrong with the server. Anyhow, let me know and we go from there.

I didn't get any thing since the server is renovated.

Thanks.

I sent it about two weeks ago to your email (saenrang@wisc.edu). Will send it again then.

I am now trying to measure the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) by PFM mode in the Multimode 8 AFM,can you send me some manuals on the opration of this instrument?

I am interested in the d33 measurement too. Please send me a copy of the manual as well @ nxg660@my.utsa.edu

Thanks
